Vessel Compass 510 Thread Battery Review – How Effective is this Palm-Sized Vape?

Updated: May 8, 2024

Vessel is a company that has garnered quite a reputation for making high-end portable vaporizers, mostly in the 510 threaded battery segment. We were really excited to receive the Vessel Compass to see how it performs and determine whether it’s worth picking up.

We’re going to do a deep dive on the Vessel Compass. Compare it to other popular 510 thread batteries and see where it shines. If you are considering picking one up, this is the perfect place to get rid of any doubts or find a unit that might better fit your needs.

How it Works

As with any Vaporizer, we highly recommend charging it fully before your first use. If this isn’t your first time using one, you’ll find the controls rather simple and intuitive. The Compass comes with a single button and LED interface.

Here is how the Vessel Compass works:

  • Step 1: Screw your 0.5/1ml Cartridge into the Compass.
  • Step 2: Turn the Unit on by pressing the main button 5 times quickly.
  • Step 3: Cycle through the voltage settings by pressing 3 times rapidly.
  • Step 4: Press and hold the button for a few seconds and start inhaling.
  • Step 5: When you stop inhaling, let go of the button and repeat.

As you can see, it works pretty much the same as most standard 510 threaded batteries. Its also something Vessel doesn’t really change throughout its own models.

Manufacturing Quality

The Vessel Compass recently added two new color waves that really make this unit look and feel amazing. These two colors come with a sating finish that helps with grip. Its small and compact, I wouldn’t call it premium like the Zeus Ion, but it’s as close as it gets to it with such a small form factor.

If using a 0.5-gram cartridge, in most cases, it will be fully covered, only exposing the mouthpiece, and when using a full-gram cart, only a little bit sticks out of the top. Just like the original Vessel, the rugged design is well done and definitely withstands a drop or two.

I can’t say enough about this device’s design—the button placement is comfortable, right in the middle of the device, and easy to locate.  I also found the LEDs on the Vessel Compass much brighter than the original Vessel, which was a really nice touch for me, it just makes it look that much sleeker when in use.

I absolutely love palm-style batteries, and I think the device was designed with the user fully in mind. It measures just over 2.5” (66mm) in length, 1.6” (41.3mm) in width, and 0.75” (19mm) in depth and weighs around 66 grams.

The Compass also comes with a swivel on its base which helps keep the carts fixed in place no matter how you place it in. Its a small detail that can be easily overlooked but does add to its easygoing nature.

Temperature Flexibility

The Compass has 4 different voltage settings to work, as with all 510 threaded batteries by Vessel.

  • 2.4 Volts  Green
  • 2.8 Volts Cyan
  • 3.2 Volts Yellow
  • 3.6 Volts – Magenta

I think this range is more than enough to handle most cartridges. There are definitely units out there that offer higher temperatures or simply a larger range, but I only really ever need them when I want to extract the most out of my concentrates. Something like the Utillian 50, which has 4 settings as well but with its range going slightly higher (3.8 Volt Max Temp).

For thinner concentrates, it’s advisable to keep it on the lower voltage setting, while any thick distillate would be better handled at the highest voltage setting. For all intents and purposes, it gets the job done efficiently.

Battery Life & Portability

The Vessel Compass has one of the larger batteries compared to most Vessel products. Its battery holds around 550 mAh, which will last you most of the way through a typical cartridge. With that said, it really depends on your use. Personally, I found that using it on and off could last for a few days.

The Compass charges pretty quickly thanks to its included USB-C cable, which is a fantastic addition to the Vessel line. I’m not a fan of a proprietary charger. It’s also compatible with its own base charger, which is super comfortable but sold separately.

The Compass is a very portable unit. It fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and is similar in size to the Litl Bit, which is, well, little, as the company name suggests. When using 0.5 ml cartridges, it’s super easy to grip the unit and expose just the tip of the mouthpiece, concealing the rest in the palm of your hand.

Overall Experience

The Vessel Compass is a great addition to the Vessel line. It has a nice design that fits well in your hand and a 550 mAh charged with a USB-C cable. It has all the things we like about the Vessel, such as good airflow, a solid build, and a sleek look.

There isn’t much to complain about when it comes to the Vessel Compass, except maybe the price. It’s a bit more expensive than most other 510 thread batteries on the market. But it’s important to consider its price is by no means on the lower end.

Some users prefer units that might not look as premium but work just as well, such as the Litl Bit or Utillian 50, but it really depends on your priorities. You can check out our 510 thread battery ranking page to see how this unit compares to other popular units.

Overall, the Compass is a solid choice, if you have the cash to spend and look forward to a simple, consistent vape, it might be exactly what you were looking for.
