Vessel Compass Review – Premium & Palm Sized

Updated: March 26, 2024
Vessel vapes have garnered quite a reputation, especially with one of  them being our picks for the top 510 threaded batteries, namely, the original Vessel vape. The original has a lot going for it, and we were really excited to receive the Vessel Compass, as it is palm-style, looks slick, and charges via a USB-C port! We’re going to do a deep dive on the Vessel Compass, so read on to learn more!

If you’re new to vaping with oil pens, we also recommend checking out our ranking charts on the best battery for THC carts for a broader scope  on what’s available on the market today.

Vessel Compass Review

How it Works

As with any vape battery, we highly recommend charging it fully before your first use. Next, screw your cartridge onto the thread at the top of the device – make sure it’s nice and secure. Then press the button on the side of the device 5 times rapidly to turn it on.

Press the button 3 times to change between voltages, there are 3 different settings (which we’ll get into in just a second). Once you have selected your temperature, press and hold the button to heat the cartridge. Then inhale and enjoy!

Manufacturing Quality

The Vessel Compass is gorgeous, end of. It is built really sturdily, including the fact that it protects your cart from most drops.

If using a 0.5-gram cart, it is fully covered by the Compass, and when using a full gram cart, only a little bit sticks out of the top.

Just like the original Vessel, the rugged design is well done and definitely stands up to a drop or two – even more so, as the cart is now fully protected.

I can’t say enough about the design of this device – the button placement is perfect, right in the middle of the device and easy to locate with your finger without having to look at the device itself – perfect for gamers that want to take a quick rip without having to take their eyes off of the screen.

I also found the LEDs on the Vessel Compass much brighter than the original Vessel, which was a really nice touch for me, it just makes it look that much sleeker when in use.

I absolutely love palm-style batteries and I think the device was designed with the user fully in mind, as every part of this unit feels purposefully manufactured. Coming in at just over 2.5” (66mm) in length, 1.6” (41.3mm) in width and 0.75” (19mm) in-depth, and weighs 66 grams without a cartridge and 81 grams with a cartridge.

The biggest downside is that the cart area is not very wide and won’t accept any oversized cartridges you might have.

If you want a very accepting battery that can handle your wider carts, take a look at the Tronian Nutron.

Power Flexibility

The Compass has 3 different voltage settings to work with – 2.8V, 3.2V, and 3.6V, making it a versatile choice for various vaping needs. I absolutely love this range, as it can handle every cart I’ve ever tried to use with it. Importantly, it’s compatible with 510 threads, which is a standard in many vaping devices.

For thinner oils, it’s advisable to keep it on the lower voltage setting, while any thick distillate would be better handled at the highest voltage setting. For all intents and purposes, it gets the job done efficiently. However, if you’re interested in a different size and a slightly varied vaporizing experience, the Vapor Cup could be a worthy exploration. Its design provides a unique approach to vaporizing wax concentrates, providing an alternative to the more traditional pen-style vaporizers like the Compass.

Vapor Quality

As with the original Vessel, the airflow of the Compass is fantastic – the redesign has not lost any quality there. The three voltage settings allow you to tailor your hits to exactly how you like them, whether they be thicker concentrates or thin oils.

Personally, I like to leave it on the middle setting (3.2V) as it gets the job done across the board, but test out each setting and figure out exactly how you like your draws.

It does have an 8-second limiter which will prevent you from overheating your cart, which is another great feature.

Of course, a lot of your experience is going to depend on the cart and oil you are using, but I found the Vessel Compass to exceed my expectations in the vapor quality department big time. I absolutely love the vapor I get off of this device – the draws are smooth and free-flowing while offering that little bit of resistance I enjoy in the original Vessel.

If you’re looking for something with even more free-flowing draws, check out the Tronian Tautron.

Battery Life & Portability

The Vessel Compass has an excellent 550mah battery that will last you most of the way through a typical cartridge before needing a recharge. I found, now that I have used it on and off again for a couple of weeks now, I’m just now needing my first recharge.

It charges very quickly via an included USB-C cable, which is a fantastic addition to the Vessel line, as I’m not a fan of a proprietary charger.

You can determine where your battery is at by the lights on the front of the device.

The Compass is a very portable unit. With the 550mah battery and USB-C charging, it makes a great travel buddy.

It fits in your hand and pocket really well and covers all of your bases for a great night out, or even a weekend away.

Ease of Use

The Compass is straightforward to use; 5 taps will turn it on, 3 will change voltages, and pressing and holding the button will fire it.

No magnetic connections, just a straight-up 510 thread connection.

Discreetness

The Compass is incredibly discreet, as it can be covered entirely by your hand while in use. It is rugged and can be quickly shoved back into your pocket after a discrete on the go hit. Really, this is where the Compass shines over the original Vessel. The updated version of the Vessel proved its useability when vaporizing medical cannabis outdoors.

Overall Experience

The Vessel Compass, with its’ great palm-style design, USB-C charging, and 550mah battery life, is an excellent addition to the Vessel line. It maintains all of the things we love about the Vessel, with great airflow, high build quality, and a premium feel.

There’s not much bad to say about the Vessel Compass – the only thing that might turn some connoisseurs off is the price tag – not overly expensive, but certainly more than most oil pens on the market, but you pay for quality.

If you’re interested in something a bit more simple and easier on the wallet, check out the Tronian Pitron which features an air activated sensor for button-less operation. If you’re a fan of the Vessel design language though, the Vessel Pen is another compelling option worth checking out.
