Glass Dab Rigs

The glass body is the main structure of the rig. No matter what style you choose, mini, recycler, beaker, straight tube, or anything else, the body is what gives the rig its shape and overall feel. This is also what usually determines how stable the piece feels on a table and how much glass the vapor has to travel through.

The water chamber is the section of the rig that holds water. Some rigs have a single simple chamber, while recyclers and incyclers can move water through multiple areas. Either way, the point is the same. Vapor passes through water before reaching the mouthpiece, and that water must be held in what we call a chamber.

The joint is the connection point between the glass rig and the banger or nail. This is one of the more practical parts to understand because it affects which accessories will fit the rig. Joint size, joint angle, and whether the connection is male or female all matter when choosing a banger, reclaim catcher, or adapter.

Percolation is what happens when vapor breaks into bubbles as it passes through the water. Some rigs do this in a very basic way, while others use more complex percolators like showerhead, honeycomb, inline, or tree-style percs. This is where a lot of the difference in smoothness and draw resistance comes from.

More percolation can make the vapor feel cooler and softer, but that does not always mean the rig will be better for every user. A very heavy perc can make the draw feel tighter and can also create more areas where reclaim collects.

The neck and mouthpiece are part of the glass body, but they still add a lot of variability to how a rig feels. Two rigs can have a similar body style and still feel different if one has a short straight neck and the other has a longer bent neck.

The neck controls the last part of the vapor path before you inhale. A longer neck can give vapor a bit more time to cool, while a shorter neck usually keeps the pull more direct. The mouthpiece also affects comfort and splashback.

The banger or nail is the heated surface where your concentrate vaporizes. Quartz bangers are the most common option because they heat quickly, keep flavor clean, and are relatively inexpensive to replace. The shape also matters. A flat-top banger is simple and common, while a round-bottom banger can help guide melted concentrate toward the center for easier cleanup.

More advanced bangers, like terp slurpers or auto-spinner bangers, are designed to move concentrate and airflow more aggressively. These can work well for users who want stronger vapor production, but they are usually more technique-heavy and require the right carb cap or pearls to perform properly.

A carb cap sits on top of the banger during the dab. Its job is to help control airflow and keep heat around the concentrate while you inhale. This usually makes vaporization more efficient, especially when the banger starts cooling down.

Carb caps also change how the air moves inside the banger. A basic cap can simply hold heat in place, while a directional cap can push airflow toward certain areas of the bucket. Spinner caps are made to create a more circular airflow, which is useful if you are using terp pearls. This is why carb caps should be matched to the banger style instead of treated like a random add-on.

Terp pearls are small balls that sit inside the banger. When the airflow is right, they move around the bucket and help spread the concentrate across the heated surface. This can help reduce pooling and make the dab vaporize more evenly.

The key thing with terp pearls is airflow. They work best with a carb cap or a banger that creates enough movement inside the bucket. If the cap does not move air properly, the pearls may not spin much. When the setup is well matched, terp pearls can make sessions much more consistent.

A heated dab tool, sometimes called a hot knife or hot axe, makes loading concentrates much cleaner. With a regular metal tool, sticky concentrate often has to be scraped onto the banger, which can leave residue on the walls or edges. A heated dab tool warms the tip just enough to let the concentrate slide off cleanly into the center of the bucket.

This is especially useful with sticky wax, rosin, live resin, or badder. Instead of fighting the material off the tool, you can place it more accurately. That usually means less waste and less cleanup after the session.

A glass dab rig requires some sort of external flame to heat the banger or nail. A regular lighter does not have enough heat for this type of setup.

For most users, the goal is not to heat the banger as aggressively as possible. It is to heat it evenly and consistently. A controlled torch setup makes the session easier to repeat.

A reclaim catcher is an extra glass piece that sits between the banger and the rig. Its job is to catch leftover concentrate before it moves into the main water chamber. For people who dab often, this can help keep the glass cleaner for longer.

The main benefit is maintenance. Instead of letting residue collect inside the water chamber or narrow glass sections, the reclaim catcher provides a separate place for buildup to collect. While they will keep most residue contained, it still requires cleaning after every few sessions, to not affect the vapor quality.
