Smok’s latest entry into the world of ultra-compact mods takes shape in the form of the Smok Vape Pen 22. Uninspiring name aside, this little device does bring a few innovations previously unseen within the realm of ultra-portable vapes. For starters, there’s the 22m diameter of the device which makes room for bigger and better performing coil heads. The 1650mAh battery is a welcome addition as well, holding a rating that’s unmatched so far when it comes to mods in this size category.

Manufacturing Quality

Vapers who prefer minimalist designs will find a lot to like about the Smok Vape Pen 22. Sporting a simple cylindrical shape, the Smok Vape Pen 22 can easily blend in when tossed into a pile of mechanical mods.

The outer finish is mostly unblemished with the exception of some minor branding by Smok, and the stainless steel construction goes a long way in providing a great hand feel when handling the mod, giving it a solid feel throughout the device.

There isn’t any screen or auxiliary buttons to be found on this device. Instead, the kit opts for a simplistic operation handled by a single round firing button which sits flush with the body of the mod.

In lieu of a screen that is normally used to indicate remaining battery life, an LED light highlighting the fire button steps in to perform this function, flashing at various intervals to give you a rough approximate of the remaining battery levels.

The included tank also utilizes the same solid stainless steel that comprises the main body of the mod, but accents it with a touch of glass. A black Delrin drip tip sits comfortably on top which offers a comfortable mouthfeel, properly insulating your lips against the heat generated by the coil.

One good thing to note about the tank is that all threads are machined quite smoothly providing a hassle-free experience when threading off the top cap for refilling or replacing coils.

Flavor Quality

Something surprising with the release of the Smok Vape Pen 22 is its announced compatibility with an all-new series of coil heads; namely the strip coil and mesh coil. Unfortunately, these aren’t included with the kit, so you’re going to have to purchase them separately.

The kit does include, however, a standard 0.3-ohm dual coil head. Thanks to the low resistance of this coil head and the direct voltage output of the Smok Vape Pen 22, performance on this kit is pretty surprising considering the very minimal footprint it holds.

Flavors come out strong with vapor production not faltering far behind bigger box mods, which is always a step in the right direction.

In terms of airflow, you might be expecting something more akin to a tight mouth to lung draw when glimpsing the tiny dimensions of the Smok Vape Pen 22, but you’d be wrong. The airflow on this little device is loose, smooth, and very relaxed, an ideal combination for all the cloud chasers out there. If you are someone who also uses 510 oil cartridges and other vapers have reported Tronian Nutron is a good place to start.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to test out the strip and mesh coils as they don’t come with the kit, but based on what we’ve seen from other manufacturers and their take on these style of coils, this little device has a bright future ahead of it.

Power Flexibility

While the Smok Vape Pen 22 does support up to three coil types altogether, that doesn’t mean it’s capable of multiple vaping modes. Staying true to the roots of its form factor, the Smok Vape Pen 22 only vapes straight via direct voltage mode.

This means you aren’t going to get any advanced features such as variable wattage and temperature control, and while such modes are hardly the standard for devices such as the Smok Vape Pen 22, potential buyers should take note of this.

Despite its resemblance to mechanical devices in the aesthetic and functional sense, the Smok Vape Pen 22 does come with a few sorts of fail-safes or onboard protection. 8-second cutoff, low-resistance protection, short-circuit protection, and low-voltage protection are all hardwired into the onboard chip of the Smok Vape Pen 22 providing a much safer vaping experience even for the newest of newcomers.

Ease of Use

When it comes to hassle-free operation, the Smok Vape Pen 22 has many other mods beat. Simply charge the device until the LED indicator stops flashing, meaning that the battery is fully charged.

Fill the tank with your e-liquid of choice via the easy and convenient top fill method, wait 5 min for the coils to fully saturate with e-liquid, turn on the device with an easy 5 clicks of the fire button.

Now you’re ready to vape! When you’re done vaping, simply click the fire button another 5 times to turn it off for safe storage.

Portability

The Smok Vape Pen 22 sits comfortably near the top when it comes to ranking kits in terms of overall size. Measuring out to a mere 110mm in height, and 22mm in diameter, the Smok Vape Pen 22 is one tiny little mod, providing a powerful vaping experience in a remarkably compact and portable little package.

When it comes to battery life, the Smok Vape Pen 22 doesn’t cut corners either. With a max rating of 1650mAh, this little device is ready to provide an all-day vaping experience, even for the heaviest of chain vapers.

And on the off chance that your battery runs out of juice mid-day, topping it off via a micro USB charging cable comes very easily.

Overall Experience

It’s hard to fault the Smok Vape Pen 22 in any department seeing as it does a bang-up job in just about every regard. From the sleek and compact form factor to the substantial vaping power it manages to output, the Smok Vape Pen 22 is one handy little kit that is both easy to use for beginners but also manages to cater to the needs of more experienced vapers.
