G Pen Dash Review – A Dash of Grenco Science

Updated: March 26, 2024

Grenco Science is cranking it up a notch in 2021, having recently released the G Pen Roam and the G Pen Connect. We had some mixed things to say about both of these wax devices, but are especially excited to dive into their newest dry herb vaporizer, the G Pen Dash. It is a very portable, minute unit, and seems poised to be a great travel device. Will it dash by the competition? Read on to learn more!

Review: G Pen Dash

G-Pen Dash review main

Vivant V Leaf Go heating chamber

How it Works

As with any device, we highly recommend charging it fully before your first use. Next, remove the magnetic mouthpiece from the device and load your ground herb into the chamber.

The G Pen Dash is made for dry herb only – not tobacco, concentrates or liquids. Press the power button 5 times to turn the device on. Press the power button 3 times to switch between temperatures. The Dash will automatically heat up and will vibrate when it reaches temperature. Once it does, inhale and enjoy.

G-Pen Dash temperature flexibility

Temperature Flexibility

The GPen Dash vaporizer has three different temperature settings. The lowest, indicated by a blue LED, is 375° F / 190° C. The middle temperature is green, 401°F / 205° C. The highest temperature is indicated by red, 428°F / 220°C.

These temperatures span the usual range of extraction for dry herbs, and cover your bases for vaporization. I would recommend any users who prefer a little more temperature control to take a look at the Utillian 620.

G-Pen-Dash Vapor quality

Vapor Quality

The vapor quality of the G Pen Dash is pretty good, for what it is. Let’s be clear, it is a budget device, so it’s not Storz & Bickel quality, but it’s alright! The vapor path is pretty short, so it does come out hot, especially on higher temperatures, but it’s not altogether unpleasant.

The glass glazed stainless steel heating temperature is solid, and if you keep it on the lower two temperatures the vapor is pretty good. You can certainly taste your terpenes, especially at the lowest temperature. The fact that they have glass glazed the chamber definitely makes the vapor quality better than your traditional stainless steel heating chamber.

The Dash heats up in about 20 seconds, which is pretty damn impressive. There are also airports on the side of the device that make the draws free flowing. The session timer will time out at 5 minutes, another nice feature.

The plastic mouthpiece is a small drawback, and for those who prefer pure flavor from a glass mouthpiece on their dry herb unit could spend an extra couple of bucks on the Utillian 421.

Manufacturing quality of G-Pen Dash vaporizer

Manufacturing Quality

The G Pen Dash is a decent little piece of technology however we can’t help feeling like we’ve seen it before. It looks an awful lot like the Flowermate Cap. This leads us to believe that Grenco took a bit of a shortcut buying another companies design. Something we don’t expect a big brand like Grenco to do.

There are a decent amount of features packed into the G Pen Dash vaporizer, with haptic feedback, that glass glazed stainless steel chamber, and once again, that 20 second heat up time. For this price point, it’s pretty solid.

The only feature missing is a digital display for the temps. Considering other budget devices like the Yocan Hit have a display, we’re a bit disappointed to not see one on the G Pen Dash.

Pass through charging is another feature the Dash boasts, which is something I wish was on every device. You should be able to keep using your device while it is charging, in my humble opinion. That being said, I’m not an engineer, so I’m not sure exactly how easy that is to execute.

The shell is made of aluminum alloy and is pretty durable. Mine has withstood a couple of drops since I have had it, and especially for a unit this small, I appreciated the sturdy build.

G-Pen-Dash inclined view

G-Pen Dash battery life

Battery Life

The G Pen Dash has a 950 mah lithium internal battery that should last you about 8-10 sessions before needing a recharge.

The LED lights on the front of the GPen Dash indicate the approximate level your battery is at. 3 indicates 80-100%, 2 lights means 60-66%, and 1 means 30-33%. Again, this is an approximation, but it’s closer to an e-cig indicator than your typical dry herb vaporizer.

Users that prefer a larger battery should check out the Zeus Arc S Hub, comes at a slightly higher price tag but is still considered a budget device and with it’s 3500mAh battery it won’t die on you any time soon.

G-Pen Dash portability

Portability

The Dash is a perfectly portable partner. The size of it alone is enough to easily take it with you on any adventure. It can easily be concealed by any hand, and is great for a quick hit on the go.

I would highly recommend investing in a portable charger if you plan to take this guy out on the go, especially because it offers pass through charging.

Like with the V Leaf Go, the biggest issue I have is with the battery power. For a night out, the Dash is a great option, but if you’re going out and about for any longer than that, I would recommend something with a little bit more battery life, like the Utillian 722.

G-Pen Dash ease of use

Ease of Use

The GPen Dash is simple to use, with your standard 5 and 3 taps to control the device. The ergonomic, magnetic mouthpiece makes loading easy.

Like most G Pen devices, it also comes with a key-chain poker tool that helps with packing your bowl and can assist when emptying it as well.

G-Pen Dash in hand

Discreetness

The G Pen Dash is among the most discreet units on the market, as it is smaller than most dry herb units and somehow smaller than most e-cigarettes as well.

It can be completely hidden by your hand easily.

Overall Experience

To sum up our Grenco GPen Dash review,it’s an okay unit in the price point. It gets the job done; I like the glass glazed stainless steel chamber (but will it hold up?), the magnetic mouthpiece, the pass through charging, and the tiny size of the device. The battery power could be better, and the vapor is a little bit harsher than I would like, but hey, you can’t win ‘em all, and in a device this size, those are bound to be issues.

My biggest gripe is that a brand as big as Grenco was lazy enough to slap their logo on another brands device like the Flowermate Cap, and try to make us all think its their original unit. I find that to be a bit of step backwards.

For a bit less you could go with a unit like the LITL1 and get some good bang for your buck. Or for a bit more you could check out a unit like the Utillian 420, which offers better vapor. If you really are a fan of Grenco Science vaporizers, then a no compromise device such as the G-Pen Elite should be right up your alley.
