Updated: March 26, 2024

The second generation of e-rigs is hitting the streets with the Puffco Peak Pro and the new Dr. Dabber Boost Evo coming out. We’ll go over all the important details you need to know to find out if it’s any good in our Dr. Dabber Boost Evo review!

How it Works

The Dr. Dabber Boost Evo is fairly straightforward and after you’ve used it a couple of times you’ll have practically mastered it (for the most part).

A hot hit requires you to heat up the atomizer before loading your material.

A cold hit requires you to load the material into the atomizer, and then heat it up.

Regardless, the default 15mm insert will handle nice sized draws, however we recommend using something the size of a grain of rice to get started with.

From there, just choose your temperature, let it heat up, and away you go! Put the carb cap over the chamber and inhale gently.

Once you use it a couple of times you’ll have pretty much mastered it as there’s not much to it!

Temperature Flexibility

Finally, the first portable e-rig with complete and total temperature control! We’ve been waiting a long time for this and while units like the Puffco Peak allow you to change things up, we haven’t yet come across a device with complete on-board control yet.

The Boost Evo grants you 6 on-board temperature settings all between 500-750°F (260-398°C in metric). This is fairly solid and while it’s not total and complete control, we’ve found that in our tests with this unit (among others) that 6 is enough to get a refined experience from your material.

The settings are well-chosen and Dr. Dabber implemented temperature regulation on the Boost Evo. Formerly, most e-rigs would operate at a set voltage which would constantly raise the temperature over time. Now in the newest generation of e-rigs, we all get concrete temperature control which stays at the setting you chose.

Vapor Quality

With e-rigs so much of the vapor quality depends on the quality of your material. With the Boost Evo, we’re glad to report that the results are more than solid!

The concrete temperature control works great providing a rich and pure terpene profile at low settings while putting out enormous clouds at high.

Credit to the quartz chamber and pure glass vapor path – you get a completely clean and full-bodied hit from the Boost Evo.

Manufacturing Quality – Dr Dabber Boost vs Puffco Peak Pro

Dr. Dabber is one of the bigger names in the e-rig and wax pen scene. While initially some of their units were average with some issues, their newest devices, like the Dr Dabber Switch, have really pushed innovation and brought in some clever engineering.

With regards to the Boost Evo, the build quality is certainly there. It looks space-age what with the colors, materials, and design, but also it’s well crafted overall. The final fit & finish is good and honestly, for the price, it better be!

The simple modular dis-assembly makes cleaning easier and while tacky to some, the lights can be plenty of fun with friends. All in all the design is a win and compared to competing e-rigs like the Puffco Peak Pro it comes down to a matter of tastes.

Battery Life

Dr. Dabber hasn’t disclosed the figure on the battery capacity for this unit, however, in terms of everyday use it’ll hold up just fine. We’ve gotten approx. 10-12 sessions per charge with our test, each session gathering a handful of hits and using a decent chunk of wax. Dr. Dabber estimates ~60 hits per charge and we’d say that’s fairly accurate.

USB-C charging with pass-through functionality is very welcome to see as we all try to transition from the old standard of MicroUSB. Pass-through is particularly useful if you’re low on power and want to still use the rig by plugging it in. A savior for group sessions!

Overall the battery life is quite fine however nothing record-breaking by any means. Lack of a removable cell does impact long-term sustainability however it should last quite a while before going kaput.

Portability

E- rigs as a whole aren’t exactly portable. Well, they are, though not in any practical manner for use on the go. Meaning that if you want to walk around the streets, bike around, or enjoy hits on the go – you’re probably then better suited by something like the G Pen Roam.

If you’re looking for something to throw into a bag and transport to a friend’s place or a quiet park bench though it’ll do just great! The durable carrying case is a very welcome addition as it’ll survive a beating and protect your precious rig inside quite well. For something that can be used on the go however, we recommend taking a look at the Dr Dabber Stella.

Ease of Use

After a slight learning curve, you’ll have gotten it down pretty well. The biggest annoyance people have with e-rigs is when cold loading – make sure to slightly warm up the device before loading! That way your wax will easily melt down into the atomizer and not stick to your wax tool like glue.

Teardown for cleaning is very easy & convenient. The pop-in and modular nature of the unit are well appreciated as you can thoroughly clean out the vapor path, atomizer, and glass fairly easily.

To clean the Dr. Dabber Boost Evo, simply use a dedicated cleaning solution. This will make quick work of any build-up and grime. Just please make sure to clean any e-rig frequently as a mess will develop surprisingly fast.

Discreetness

To the passing eye, it’s a newfangled piece of tech. If you’re trying to use it in public, just know that people likely will spend a few seconds watching you.

We’d suggest something pen-shaped like the Utillian 5 if discretion is your top priority.

The Dr Dabber Boost Evo’s not discreet with the colors and design and while Dr. Dabber advertises a ‘stealth mode’ with no lighting, you’re not exactly going to be covert regardless.

Overall Experience

It’s really hard to choose between all the new e-rigs and each one offers something different. We find the Boost Evo to be a middle ground choice between all of them in terms of portability, battery life, and overall finesse.

We reckon you’ll be well satisfied with whichever wax vaporizer you choose, and that sentiment holds true for the Boost Evo. USB-C passthrough charging is a godsend when it comes to group sessions and the vapor quality is as pure as you could hope.

We’d definitely recommend this unit and choosing between other rigs and this comes down to a matter of preference. If price is a factor, then check out The Core, which is a great choice if you’re on a tight budget.
