Utillian 722 vs Arizer Air 2 – 2 Air or Not 2 Air?

Updated: October 6, 2023

The  Arizer Air 2 was released in 2017 and, just like the rest of the Arizer line, it is a great device, packed with solid features that culminate in some tasty vapor. The Utillian 722 was released in 2019 as the sleeker younger brother to the fan-favorite Utillian 721. There is a lot to like about both units, so we’re going stack them up against each other in a vaporizer showdown.

Vapor Quality

Arizer is well known for making units with top shelf vapor quality. There are a handful of companies that compete with Storz & Bickel for the best of the best, and Arizer is certainly one of them.

The Air 2’s hybrid heating system delivers great quality vapor, both in smoothness and taste. The glass stem system that Arizer favors certainly cools your vapor before it reaches your lips.

As with most of the Arizer devices, the draw resistance leaves something to be desired. I find I like the wide-open draw of the Utillian 722 much better, and the new and improved wider mouthpiece helps that even more. You can get along, deep draw from the Utillian 722 with very little draw resistance, which personally, I like more.

The one place I find Arizer hits a small speedbump is in the quantity of vapor. They have slightly above average vapor density but can’t really output seriously dense clouds of vapor.

This is where the Utillian 722 shines. The convection heating style of the 722 outputs great tasting vapor without sacrificing vapor density. You can get a serious amount of vapor out of the 722. Just like the 721, the flavor profile of your cannabinoids and terpenes will shine through, and the differences between strains are noticeable in each draw.

Both units emit great vapor, and the flavor of each is nothing to scoff at, but the convection flavor on the 722 gives it the slight edge here.

Manufacturing Quality

The original Air had a couple of minor issues that were solved with the Air 2 update. The digital screen is a huge plus, it features faster heat up time, and offers full temperature control.

It also features the same removable 18650 battery. The Air 2 also has an isolated airpath and the vapor only needs to travel through the glass stem.

Arizer is known for making workhorse units, but the Utillian 722 is no slouch. With a sprayed aluminum finish, the unit is sturdy in the hand and can withstand a couple of bumps and drops.

In fact, without the glass stem, I’d say it is much more droppable than the Air 2 – though we don’t recommend you hold a drop test for your vaporizers.

This is a tough contest, as both units are made well, and you can tell both companies thought about the design a lot. They are also both second iterations of existing units, and it’s very clear both companies took customer feedback into the design of their devices.

The elegance of the Arizer Air 2 and its glass stem is the only thing that separates these two, for me.

The Air 2 ekes out a point here.

Ease of Use

Another tough category. The Air 2, with its digital screen and complete temperature control, is certainly easy to use, but the 722 and it’s one-button design make it easier to use right out of the box.

Pressing and holding the minus button and the power button will turn the Air 2 on, and then changing temperatures is just in pressing the plus and minus buttons on the device.

With the 722, all you need to remember is how many times to press the button. 5 taps will turn it on, 3 will change temperature, and a press and hold will engage boost mode.

Both are easy to load – simply remove the glass stem from the Air 2, load your grind herbs in, and put it right back into the device. The 722 and it’s magnetically held mouthpiece is a synch as well, as you can easily remove it, pack your herbs in, and place it back on the top of the unit.

The only dividing line is how careful you must be with the devices. As mentioned above, the Air 2 with its glass stems must be treated carefully, especially after a session. I’ve personally broken more than one stem when I’m not too careful. The Utillian 722 is built of sturdier stuff, able to withstand most drops.

I will take the opportunity to once again warn against performing any sort of drop test at home, but this category goes to the Utillian 722.

Portability

While both units are similar in size, there is one major difference between the two, and that is the glass stem. An easily breakable component means bringing this device around with you will almost certainly require a vaporizer case. The Utillian 722 and its mouthpiece that swivels inward take up more space, but with a more compact form factor.

For this reason, we give this one to the 722.

Battery Life

The Utillian 722 features a 2300mah internal battery that will yield roughly 60 minutes of use – on average, the same as most vaporizers.

The Air 2 has a removable 18650 battery that will last roughly 90 minutes of continuous use, and the added ability to swap the batteries and keep your vaporizer running all day long gives this category solidly to the Arizer Air 2.

Discreetness

Similarly to portability, the glass stem of the Air 2 is the main problem in terms of discreetness. It sticks out, quite literally, and is more difficult to conceal in your palm.

The 722 is certainly larger, but the mouthpiece swivels inward and could easily be mistaken for a power bank when tucked away.

For this reason, we give this category to the Utillian 722.

Temperature Flexibility

While most people won’t change their temperature to the individual degree, the Arizer Air 2 offers more temperature options, giving you a range of 50° C/ 122°F – 220° C/ 428°F, giving it the victory here.

That being said, the Utillian 722 puts up a solid fight, featuring the temperatures people most use (180°C, 190°C, 200°C, 210°C) and the ability to boost up to a higher maximum temperature than the Air 2, 225°C. This added 5 degrees is excellent to finish off a session.

Showdown

The Utillian 722 is our winner!

Both companies have been striving to make better and better vaporizers in recent years, and you can’t really go wrong with either of these units.

But the compact size profile, wide-open airflow, convection heating style, and higher maximum temperature make the Utillian 722 a more flexible, capable device that outputs a tremendous amount of vapor.
