The GoBoof Alfa has been a popular unit over the past couple of years and has been well received from both critics and users alike. We thought we\u2019d pick one up to see if this unit still holds up or is beginning to show its age. So without further ado, on to our review! (hey that rhymed!)<\/p>\n

Review:\u00a0GoBoof Alfa<\/span><\/h2>\n

\"Goboof<\/a>

\n\"How<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

How it Works<\/h3>\n

To use the GoBoof Alfa turn the device over so you are looking at the bottom and unlatch the bottom door to expose the heating chamber. Load the chamber with your desired herbs, make sure to pack them down fairly tight and then close the bottom door and click it shut.<\/p>\n

To turn the GoBoof on just turn the dial at the top of the unit from the off position to any of the 5 provided temperature settings. Once the temperature has been set the unit automatically begins to heat up and can reach temperature in about 30 seconds. Once it has reached temperature the LED light will turn green to let you know the device is ready.<\/p>\n

The device does have an auto-shut off that will kick in after 10 minutes of use to preserve battery life. To turn the device back on just rotate the dial back to the off position and then turn it back to your desired temperature to continue your cycle.<\/p>\n

\"Temperature<\/a><\/p>\n

Temperature Flexibility<\/h3>\n

The unit though we mentioned 5 temperature settings, really only has 3, low which is 190 Celsius, medium which is 200C and high which is 210C. This is a pretty standard range for a dry herb vape and will satisfy most users.<\/p>\n

Where the GoBoof Alfa gains some brownie points is the 2 unique temperature modes A\/T and A\/P. A\/T stands for automatic time, which means that the device will slowly increase the temperature from the lowest setting to the highest over the 10 minute cycle. This is great for people who love to manually increase their temperatures over their session and takes all the thought out of the process.<\/p>\n

A\/P stands for Auto-Puff, meaning the device will slowly increase the temperature with each draw you take. This is great because it will help preserve flavor between draws and will only heat after you take a draw.<\/p>\n

These 2 modes offer something different to users than most other vaporizer companies, but I would not say they are enough to someone over the edge to buy the GoBoof Alfa. Whereas Davinci IQC<\/a> also has 2 ways to set your temperature, but the precise temperature control feature is where it takes the lead over GoBoof Alfa.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n

\n\"Vapor<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Vapor Quality<\/h3>\n

Vapor quality from the GoBoof is just okay. We found that the low and medium heat settings really did not produce much vapor, though it did excel in flavor at the lower temperature. But at the medium setting we expected vapor to be a little more dense.<\/p>\n

On the high setting you definitely get more dense vapor but it is at a cost. The unit on the highest temperature produces relatively harsh vapor unlike the Zeus Arc GTS Hub<\/a> and will have most users reaching for a glass of water. This is due to the relatively short vapor path of the GoBoof Alfa as the vapor does not have much time to cool when it is on the higher setting as it travels up the vapor path.<\/p>\n

How you pack your herbs also seems to directly affect your quality of vapor. We found with the GoBoof Alfa, like many other conduction vaporizers, works best with a fairly tight pack. The tighter pack promotes better heat transfer and a more even good. We found packing it loosely resulted in sub-par vapor production and a very uneven cook.\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/span>

\n

\"Manufacturing<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Manufacturing\u00a0Quality<\/h3>\n

The GoBoof Alfa appears to be relatively well constructed and feels nice in the hands. We don\u2019t love the hinged door at the bottom of the unit where you place your herbs and fear that either the hinge or the clasp that keeps it in place will eventually wear out.<\/p>\n

The short silicone mouthpiece leaves a lot to be desired and takes a couple of sessions to get rid of the residual silicone taste it can create.<\/p>\n

One thing we did like about the GoBoof Alfa is the heating chamber which features a post in the middle of the bowl. This post heats up along with the rest of the chamber and promotes a much more even cook without the need to constantly stir your herbs. It is something we saw a while ago with the Iolite, and wish more companies would utilize this undervalued feature.<\/p>\n

I think our biggest gripe with this unit is what is offered for the price, this unit retails between 230 \u2013 250 depending on where you pick it up, in that price range there are a ton of other more viable options than the GoBoof Alfa. The Zeus Smite +<\/a> instantly jumps to mind which gives you precise temperature control for around $40 cheaper. Or even the Utillian 723<\/a> which offers impressive convection vapor for $150<\/p>\n

For the premium price the GoBoof Alfa is still listed we expect a lot more from the device and this is where it begins to show its age.\u00a0<\/div><\/div>

\n

\"Battery<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Battery Life<\/h3>\n

Battery life on the GoBoof Alfa is average lasting about 1 hour. This would not be so bad if it did not take so damn long to charge. We timed charging our unit from completely dead and it clocked in at just under 4 hours.<\/p>\n

This is an extremely long wait time for only 1 hour of battery life and is probably one of the most frustrating aspects of this device, not to mention it still uses a pin-connection and not the micro-USB which is now standard on most units.<\/p>\n

Users that prefer devices with higher battery life usually tend to lean towards the Arizer Solo 2<\/a> that has a charge time of 3 hours depending on the temperature settings.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n

\n\"Portability<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Portability<\/h3>\n

The GoBoof Alfa is a fairly portable device and is slightly larger than a deck of cards. This makes it really easy to pocket the device to take out for a night similar to the LITL1 vaporizer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Where the GoBoof loses some points in this category is the dial which can be easily switched on while in\u00a0 your pocket. We had this happen to us once while we were walking to the park to take it out for the test. By the time we noticed the device had already cooked our herbs, bummer.<\/p>\n

We wish GoBoof would incorporate some kind of lock feature to help those who carry their devices around from being switched on by mistake.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n

Overall Experience<\/h3>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

We can see why the GoBoof was so popular when it was first launched, however for the price of the unit there are far better alternatives. As we mentioned the Utillian 621<\/a> is much more affordable and provides users with precise temperature control, something that is severely lacking from the GoBoof Alfa.<\/p>\n

If your main concern is vapor quality be sure to check out the Utillian 723<\/a>, this unit is cheaper than the Alfa and actually uses convection to heat your herbs for an amazingly flavorful session.<\/p>\n
