Unfortunately for some, the price of a vaporizer can seem pretty steep. It\u2019s easy to justify a couple bucks for a pack of rolling papers or a pipe or even a bit more for a bong, but some people can\u2019t justify the price tag associated with a quality vaporizer. For that reason, and maybe because of their adventurous spirit, they choose the DIY route and make a lightbulb vaporizer. This is a bad plan, especially for those who are new to vaporizing. The lightbulb vaporizer has a few serious disadvantages over even the most basic vaporizers, so in this post we\u2019ll be telling you what you need to know about the lightbulb vaporizer including why it\u2019s a bad idea.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22923\" src=\"https:\/\/tvape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Lightbulb-Vaporizer-01-1200x520-1.jpg\" alt=\"Lightbulb Vaporizer\" width=\"1200\" height=\"520\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>What is a Lightbulb Vaporizer?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To keep this nice and basic, the lightbulb vaporizer is a way to heat your herbs without letting it make direct contact with a flame. This lets you heat up the herbs and vaporize the compounds so you can inhale it. Theoretically speaking, of course. Let\u2019s break down the construction of the lightbulb vaporizer so we can tell you why this is a bad idea, step by wonderful step.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using a towel to hold the bulb in case it breaks while you\u2019re building it, use a very sharp knife to pry the bottom metal piece away from the light bulb.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let\u2019s start with the possible breaking bulb. Do you enjoy getting stabbed in the hand by sharp glass? I should think not. A towel will be a poor barrier against that sort of thing as jagged glass can be sharp as hell, so your safety already isn\u2019t guaranteed.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Next up is the super sharp knife. If you aren\u2019t like me, you won\u2019t be worried about dulling one of your good knives. If you are, why the hell are you dulling one of your good knives? Regardless, working with super sharp knives in this way doesn\u2019t fit particularly well with just about anybody\u2019s safety standards and you could get badly hurt with one wrong move.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 2)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a twist and a push of your knife through the hole created by the removed metal piece on the bottom of the bulb, crack the ceramic away from the metal base of the bulb. This may require a good amount of force<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yay! More delicate handiwork done with the super sharp knife! See above for my thoughts on that, then double it in light of the whole extra force note at the end of that step. I like knives stabbing my hand as much as I like glass stabbing my hand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 3)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once you\u2019ve broken and removed the ceramic at the base of the bulb, use the same technique with the knife to break the glass in the hole and remove the filament.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Apparently you can use a screwdriver for this part, but regardless the idea hasn\u2019t really gotten any better and it\u2019s still pretty easy to mess it up and end up with your hand looking like it did a few second in a blender.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 4)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Clean the inside of the light bulb. Some people suggest using salt or sugar if you happen to have a frosted light bulb. Once done, throw out the salt\/sugar and wash the bulb with hot water and soap inside and out.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here\u2019s where things get really sketchy. The frosting inside the light bulb is usually silica. Have you ever vaped <a title=\"Health Effects of Silica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silicon_dioxide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">silica<\/a>? If you\u2019re alive and breathing normally, the answer is probably no, and if you want to keep your lungs functioning properly, you\u2019re likely going to want to continue not inhaling silica. The point is that the inside of a light bulb isn\u2019t pure and clean and you likely don\u2019t have the means to properly and completely clean it to a point where you\u2019re guaranteed to be safe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 5)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Use a plastic bottle cap that fits to the base of the light bulb. Drill a small hole off to the side of the cap, and another hole only big enough to fit your tube in the middle. Make sure the hole is the perfect fit for your tube.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">And now we\u2019re using plastic in the vaporizer? I think you all know how we here at tvape.com feel about plastic in vaporizers. If you don\u2019t, spoiler alert: it\u2019s horrible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 6)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Make sure the bulb is bone-dry both inside and out. Put your tube through the hole of your cap, then tape the bottom of the light bulb so that the cape makes a tight seal with the bulb.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tape is yet another material we frown upon as building materials for a vaporizer, though no manufacturer has dared try to use it in their unit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 7)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Load it with herbs, put your cap on, and use it by lighting the underside of the bulb with a candle or lighter where your herbs is until you see vapor and inhale.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oh lord, no.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tvape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Lightbulb-Vaporizer.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3467\" src=\"https:\/\/tvape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Lightbulb-Vaporizer.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tvape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Lightbulb-Vaporizer.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/tvape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Lightbulb-Vaporizer-150x150-1.jpg 150w, https:\/\/tvape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Lightbulb-Vaporizer-300x300-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tvape.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Lightbulb-Vaporizer-125x125-1.jpg 125w\" alt=\"Lightbulb Vaporizer\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Lightbulb Vaporizer: Breakdown<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are a few things here that make this a bad vaporizer, and we aim to tackle them all almost like we would a review. Technically, this is a \u201cportable vaporizer\u201d, so we\u2019ll use those evaluation criteria.<\/p>\n<h3>Build Quality<\/h3>\n<p>Seriously? It\u2019s made of a light bulb, tape, a bottle cap, and a straw or tube. The quality of the materials couldn\u2019t be lower quality if you tried without making a vapor-based death machine.<\/p>\n<h3>Vapor Quality<\/h3>\n<p>Not only do you not really have temperature flexibility, but most of your vapor pathway is plastic and you\u2019re vaping it on the inside of a light bulb. It\u2019s potentially very dangerous and the vapor can\u2019t even cool before it gets to you so it will likely be pretty hot and harsh. Also, there\u2019s no screen so have fun inhaling herbs.<\/p>\n<h3>Look and Feel<\/h3>\n<p>It looks like it was built by a hobo.<\/p>\n<h3>Portability<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You could\u2019t pay me enough to carry a light bulb like this in my pocket, even if it did fit. You\u2019re one wrong move away from having a pocket full of razor blades.<\/p>\n<h3>Discreetness<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s big, so it will stand out and nobody on the planet would think that vaporizing out of a light bulb looks normal\u2026or cool.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So there you have it! This is a horrible and dangerous idea that yields a sub-par vaporizer to say the least. The price of a proper, quality vaporizer might seem high, but this is an investment you\u2019re making. It\u2019s an investment in your herbs which will last SO much longer, and an investment in your health. Don\u2019t cheap out on yourself.
