Firefly 2+ (Plus) Vaporizer Review – Fireflying to new heights?

Updated: March 26, 2024

We’ve done a Firefly 2 review before as well as the OG Firefly and had positive yet mixed feelings. Mediocre battery life, tight draw restriction, odd user interface and generally hard to use. Coupled with awesome vapor quality and an interesting design, we hope to see an improvement in the refreshed version, the Firefly 2 Plus. Check out how it may stand up compared to the old unit.

Review: Firefly 2+ Vaporizer

Firefly 2+ Vaporizer Review

How it Works

Like the original Firefly 2 Vaporizer, the Firefly 2 Plus heats up within just a few seconds with its powerful, full convection heater.

Loaded with medium-coarsely ground herb and gently packed down, the Firefly 2 Plus still requires a slow and steady draw to get proper results.

Stirring every few draws is still necessary too.Firefly 2+ Vaporizer available colors

Temperature Flexibility

Like the Davinci IQC has full temperature control with the smartphone app and the onboard presets which are also suitable for concentrates.

Pre-set temperature settings are also available without the use of the app and can be set by interacting with the sensor buttons on the Firefly 2+.

You can get cool enough to vape other herbs like lavender or get hot enough to combust herb or have nice, low-temperature dabs.

Vapor Quality

With proper technique, the vapor quality from the Firefly 2 is certainly among the top dogs of the group. The vapor is incredibly smooth, quite potent, and very very delicious like the Mighty. Not to mention there’s also the added benefit of the Firefly 2+ mouthpiece managing to stay cool throughout each session.

The Firefly 2 is one of the few devices to actually perform well with concentrates. The temperature goes high enough and melting a glob into the mesh pad allows you to get a dozen nicely sized, very flavorful hits off. Definitely one of the best dry herb and concentrate 2-in-1 vaporizers around in this unit.

As the draw restriction is our main gripe with the Firefly 2, a loosened draw would be nice, however, we don’t think 33% is even enough to make it easier to use.

Manufacturing Quality

The Firefly 2 has a nice design philosophy, and the Firefly 2+ is minorly different. The top lid has another hole for the LED logo on it. While it’s a neat change, we would’ve preferred something functional. A display to monitor temperature, battery life, or something else useful something offered by devices like the Focus V Pro. As it stands, it doesn’t’ actually seem to change anything.

Beyond that, the Firefly is quite well built. A little lighter than expected but sturdy and nice, the materials used and overall build quality is certainly up there. You get what you pay for!

The packaging is clean, nice, and reminiscent of Apple products. You get a good chunk of cleaning tools, alcohol wipes, a USB charger, 3 Firefly 2+ concentrate pads, and two batteries. This is about all you need however a quality metal or glass dab tool for concentrates would be better. We expect this to be about the same with the Firefly 2+.Firefly 2+ Vaporizer inclined view

Battery Life

The original battery has about 770 maH, which would yield roughly 2-4 full bowls, depending on your usage habits. This disappointed many and ourselves as well. For a battery with this power demand and performance, at least double is what we’d be satisfied with. As units like the Zeus Arc GTS Hub pack over 3500mAh in a smaller package, we can’t say we’re not disappointed with the Firefly 2+ battery.

Though they are removable, they’re proprietary, custom-made batteries that aren’t easy to come across and are quite pricey. We wish they’d convert to a more standardized format, but we believe that’s unlikely.

Portability

It’s a pretty small device and fits well in most pockets and jackets. This is hampered by the fact you need to open the delicate lid and carefully stir the load every few hits for even extraction.

It’s a middle ground, not quite as portable as the LITL 1, but not cumbersome like the Arizer Solo 2.

Ease of Use

While loading and cleaning are pretty simple and straightforward, just getting the draw technique and results gives many people a hard time.

Giving it to friends or strangers is always hit and miss.

Take slow draws like drinking a really thick milkshake is the best way to get results from it. Users looking for a unit that is easy to use tend to prefer devices like the Utillian 722.

Discreetness

We’ve seen some pretty wacky e-cigs before, so using the Firefly kind of pales in comparison.

The Firefly 2+ is certainly the same in terms of discretion as to the Davinci Miqro.

Its very rapid heat up times allows you to have a big, heavy hit or two within 30 seconds. Pretty convenient at times!

Overall Experience

The Firefly 2 itself was a top quality performer back when it was released – if you could manage to learn the proper draw technique. For us, this was a process and a lot of people manage to get good results, but many get frustrated and can’t manage to get a good hit off.

With the new update to the app and an advertised easier draw, we hope the Firefly 2+ remedies the complaints of many.
